Parent Community & Class Volunteers

Some of the ways you can become directly involved in the school is by being a Room Parent, Communications Telephone Tree Volunteer, or as a member of one of the following committees:

ALL STAR Parent Volunteers

This committee organizes room parents and classroom volunteers to supplement and assist in the classroom instruction and related activities of the school. This committee recruits volunteers and keeps track of volunteer hours.

Enrichment Committee

This committee coordinates the winter interest classes taught by skilled parents and professionals. Additionally, teachers may request that this committee research art resource teachers for one-time projects and/or supplies. Teachers may elect to have services and supplies donated from the parents, business community or may spend a portion of their Stipends for art enrichment projects in their classrooms.

Environment Committee

This committee plans and organizes, with staff, projects to enhance the school environment. Parents and students become involved in gardening, painting, tree planting and mural projects.

Ways and Means Committee

This committee plans and coordinates school fundraising activities, solicits funding from the private sector or school activities and programs and assists the Town Hall treasurer in preparing budget reports.

Technology Committee

This committee oversees the implementation of our technology plan. They work to install software and maintain the computers in the classrooms as well as solicit donations of computer hardware.

Library Committee

This committee works to improve the school library. They oversee the organization, selection of new books; grant writing and day-to-day operations of our library.

Grant Writing Committee

This group seeks out and writes grants to support school programs. Priority areas for grant writing include Garden Designs, Totem Pole Art Project, Instrumental Music Program, Special Education Inclusion Program and the CATCH Program. The committee meets on Fridays each month at 8:45 usually in the Staff Lounge.

Books & Beyond

This is a committee that sponsors many different reading and writing awareness programs throughout the year at Community. Books & Beyond sponsors events and programs such as the Read-A-Thon, Birthday Book Club (recognition for children who donate books to the school on their birthdays), Book Pals (volunteers who read weekly to classes for 20 minutes), School Library Support, Visiting Writers (organize and coordinate the visits of writers such as poets, screenwriters, book authors, journalists, etc. to classes during the year), Grandparents Day (grandparents and special friends come and read; they’re also treat to a special lunch), Used Book Drive, and much, much, more. If you like language arts, this committee is for you! Be sure to attend their orientation meeting at the beginning of the school year for full details.

Art Committee

This group of parents will be working with staff on implementing our visual arts program. The art committee plans and implements school wide art project such as the murals and totem poles.

School Safety

This group of parents will be called upon be the Community Council to develop plans to improve the safety of students and staff at COmmunity Magnet School. This group will also participate in developing out Safe School Plan.

African America Reading Program

Provides Saturday enrichment classes for African American students led by volunteers to provide culture enrichment and language arts education using African-American literature.

Classroom Volunteers

Classroom volunteers can assist the teacher for an hour or two a week; tutor an individual child on a regular basis; prepare materials at home for classroom use; share professional activities and special interests with the children; be available to accompany children on field trips; or participate in a class telephone tree.

Room Parents organize special class events and holiday parties and coordinate parent participation in classroom activities.
