The camp site is a safe and serene environment filled with greenery, flowers, and trees, a full baseball field, soccer field, basketball and handball courts, a reading park, and play structures. There is ample room for riding bikes, scooters, skating and water play. There is an art studio, computer lab, theater, rehearsal rooms, workshop facilities, a cooking kitchen and library.

The staff, both senior and junior, are dedicated to respecting the individual uniqueness of the camper and providing an amicable environment for growing and learning. We believe that the academic studies of the school year are actualized and applied in summer months through creativity, free play, and socialization with one’s peers. Our goal is simple: provide a safe, happy, family-like place for summer fun, personal growth, and new friendships.

Age range: 5 years—13 years old
All campers bring their own lunch
AM and PM snacks are provided

With this year’s event, we’re hoping to raise $100,000!! To reach that goal, we need a lot of help bringing in donations.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS:

Sure, we need camps and new purses and gift certificates from your favorite restaurants, but …

• Do you know a friend that knows a friend that can get a script signed?
• Or how about someone that has a condo in Cabo?
• Do you charter fishing boats?
• Do you make the best cobbler mix in town?
• How about the best Korean BBQ??
• Knitted or silk scarves?
• Do you know a designer that can donate samples?
• Do you have a friend that publishes cookbooks?
• Can you host 8 kids for a movie night in your back yard so parents can have a night out?

Career Day will be held on April 22nd. Students will be given the opportunity to learn about and understand the variety of career choices available. This very special day helps motivate our children to think about their own future possibilities and explore an interest/career they would have never sought on their own.

We need everyone’s support to make this successful.  The magazine packet came home with your child yesterday.  Please use this fundraiser as an opportunity to renew any magazines that you are currently receiving and to order new ones.  You can even go to the QSP website at www.qsp.com or go directly to our magazine Web page at http://www.qsp.com/profile/wubz and order online by using our school code 425002638.  Please ask family, friends, and co-workers to do the same.  All orders are due by Monday, February 22!  Please make checks payable to CSPA.

OUR GOAL IS AT LEAST 5 ORDERS PER FAMILY!  Share the URL and code with your Facebook friends and Twitter followers.

Community Magnet’s student body is impressively diverse. We have one of the highest school ratings in California. Our children are supported not only by their teachers, but by the aides the Parent Association has long provided for every class room. To round out their school days, our students are exposed to art, music, drama, Spanish, and PE. But, the sorry state of California’s economy means we are staring at a huge budget shortfall. Much of what we have long considered essential to Community Magnet is in danger of being cut, as our school budget is reduced by at least a third next year.

To avoid cutting those services and programs that set Community apart from the rest, we are asking you to be part of the solution by giving toward the $100,000 Challenge Grant. The Challenge? Our challenge is to raise $100,000 between now and February 28th from the Community Magnet families. We are seeking at least 50 donations of $2,000, in order to raise $100,000 – an amount that will make a BIG difference. If we are unable to raise the entire $100,000 commitment, you will have the option to opt out, although every penny donated would go towards the children.

Every parent who supports Community Magnet and its annual fundraising efforts plays a critical role. Working together, we’ve provided our children with a school experience that rivals any in Los Angeles, including those private schools with huge price tags. We value every kind of contribution and right now we need to ask those with more to give at a level that is above and beyond the norm. If you can, please step forward and make a tax-deductible gift, so that we aren’t sending our children into classes with one teacher and 35 9-year olds.

Why Now? Our state and school district are in dire financial condition. LAUSD is facing a 1.2 billion dollar deficit this year and the gap is anticipated to be even bigger next year.  Download the attached document to see our budget projections.

The state Charter Implementation grant was a two year grant given to our school from 2008 – 2010. We are excluded from most federal grant programs because fewer than 40% of Community Magnet students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. CSPA’s fundraising is down in a sagging economy. In short, the financial outlook for next year is bleak. We need your help! How Will the Challenge Grant Money be Spent? While we don’t know exactly how the Community Parents’ group will vote to spend the $100,000 Challenge Grant, we do know that this campaign must be successful or many of our “extras” will be gone. What are “extras”? The biggest priority is to continue to provide teacher’s aides in every classroom. Other programs the challenge grant money might help save are PE, drama, music, Spanish, art and CATCH.

Can you imagine our school without:

• Teachers Assistants PE Program
• Drama Enrichment Music & Art Program Library Program
• CATCH Spanish Program Valet
• Field Trips Computer Lab Office Support

It’s hard to imagine our children’s long school days without these “extras.”

Our school puts forth efforts to involve parents and community in our school and to keep them informed. This is done through meetings with groups such as Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA)/PTA, School Advisory Councils, school volunteers and Adopt-A-School Partners.

On Thursday, February 11th from 5-8pm, CMCS is proud to present ‘The Sweetheart’s Dance!’

‘The Sweetheart’s Dance’ is a fundraising event for the entire family…kids, moms, dads, uncles, aunts and grandparents! There will be a lot of fun activities like face painting, dancing, food, taking pictures with friends and much, much more.

Cat in the Hat will also be available.  See below

Theme: 70’s Rule!!!!!  70 hits mixed in with today’s favorites

When: Thursday, February 11th - 5:00-8:00 pm (no homework!)

Where: Community School Auditorium

Cost: $20.00 admission and 15 tickets for the whole family!!! (The tickets are used at the booths to purchase food and participate in the activities.  You may purchase more tickets at the door for $1.00each)

Cat in the Hat for the Sweetheart’s Dance

Child Care will be provided for those parents who do not want to come to school at dismissal time and return for the dance. You can leave your child at school to play and have fun with friends! After school care will begin immediately following dismissal Thursday, February 11th, until the start of the Sweetheart Dance. We do ask that when you arrive at school, to please come by Room 1 to pick up your child for the Dance. You will be asked to sign them out, so please be prepared. Below is the application and the fee will be $15 per child. Please send that in a separate envelope to not be included with your Sweethearts Dance Admission. Thank you for supporting our school.

Did you recently upgrade to Windows 7 / the newest Mac or get a new TV and VCR/DVD player?  Don’t dump your electronic waste, give it to us instead.

Any computers or electronics that are in good working condition will be reviewed and potentially used at the school.  The remainder will be taken away and recycled by GO JUNK FREE.
