Last Friday we ate fresh, organic Moro Blood Oranges!
Blood oranges contain a pigment called anthocyanin which is not typically found in citrus but rather more common in other red fruits and flowers.
Blood oranges are most abundant in Italy and Spain. They have become more popular in the U.S.
and are grown in California and Texas. California Blood Oranges are in season from November to May.
Gory name aside, this is one of the tastiest members of the orange family. A ripe blood orange is very sweet and mellow. The flavor of this orange has raspberry and strawberry overtones, and is less acidic than other oranges.
Thank you to all of the parents who make “Fruit on Friday” possible with their generous donations.
